# Video editing ## Roll types - A roll: main content - B roll: secondary, help create dramatic tension or illustrate a point ## Techniques - **J and L cuts** - L cut: video before audio edit (L shape on the left of the clip) - J cut : audio before video edit (J shape on the right of the clip) - **Tighter a-cuts** - whenever we hear a pause in a video it sounds weird, so you want to minimise them. - **Subtle sound effects** - sound effects can massively elevate your production value when used subtly. They make your videos feel polished. I tend to use a sound effect whenever something appears on the screen. If you're interested in learning how I edit my videos, I made a [video editing Skillshare class](https://go.aliabdaal.com/videoediting) that's totally worth watching - **Titles, lower thirds & transitions** - these make your video more engaging, easier to follow, and are useful ways to include branded elements. I buy all my titles, lower third, and transitions from [Videohive](https://videohive.net/). - Text: lower-third - Identify someone or something (e.g., banner at the bottom with the name of a person) ## Adobe Premiere - Source video - Shortcuts - J: backward - K: pause the video - L: forward - Hold K then L: move forward in slow motion - Hold K then J: move backward in slow motion - I: set in point - O: set out point - Alt + K: play from the in point to the out point - ~: toggle full screen - Make sub-clips when there are multiple parts of a video you want to use - Sequence - Sequence Settings - Shortcuts - Backslash: fit all the sequence in the available space - Up/Down: navigate through edits (previous/next) - N: go to the end of the sequence - Hold shift: snap to edit points - Transitions - Audio: Constant Power - Video: Cross dissolve - Exports - Check "Use maximum render quality" - Use YouTube 2160p 4K preset - Video configuration - VBR, 2 pass - Adjust bitrate - Audio configuration - AAC
