# Answer Socrates Answer Socrates (answersocrates.com) is a freemium [[Keyword Research|keyword research]] tool that finds the questions people actually type into Google. You enter one or two seed keywords, pick a country and a language, and it returns hundreds of real search phrases (the homepage claims 1,000+ on average), grouped into questions, prepositions, comparisons and A to Z autocomplete lists. It's usually pitched as a cheaper (or free) alternative to [[AnswerThePublic]]. I first noted it in March 2025 as "Check AskSocrates", next to "Check [[AnswerThePublic]]". Same family of tools: start from what people search for, then decide what to write. ## What it does The core idea is simple: content fails when nobody searches for it. Answer Socrates reads what people already type into Google and turns it into lists you can write from. - **Question keywords**: one seed keyword becomes hundreds of long-tail phrases, sorted by type (how, what, why, can, vs, for, with, etc.) - **Recursive search**: runs the results back through the engine to find the follow-up searches people make after the first one. Third-party reviewers say it surfaces 100 to 150 extra keywords per seed. The 2025 owner review credits the method to Steve Toth (SEO Notebook) - **Keyword clustering**: groups a keyword list (its own or a CSV from [[Ahrefs]] or Semrush) into topics, with search intent and funnel stage (TOFU, MOFU, BOFU). This is the feature reviewers praise most. They also say it's roughly 80 to 85% accurate, so you still have to check the groups by hand - **Search metrics**: volume, CPC and competition (paid plans only) - **People Also Ask extractor**: the PAA questions Google shows for a keyword - **Trending topics**: what's spiking by country and language - **CSV export**: keyword lists or full clusters, with metrics - **Free micro-tools**: keyword generators, title generators (SEO, YouTube, TikTok), an AI rewriter, an AI content detector, a summarizer, an entity extractor, etc. ### LLM Brand Tracker More recently, it has also moved into [[Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)]]. The LLM Brand Tracker runs prompts through [[ChatGPT]], [[Gemini]], [[Perplexity]], [[Claude]], DeepSeek and Grok, then reports whether your brand gets mentioned, your share of voice and which sources the models cite. ChatGPT and Gemini can be tracked for free; the other models need a paid plan. There's also a free "Radar" that checks a domain against a stored set of ChatGPT answers and Google AI Overviews. Their argument: AI engines answer questions, so pages that answer real questions get cited, and finding those questions is what the main tool does. ### Chrome extension The free extension ("SEO Keyword Research by AnswerSocrates") adds a sidebar to Google results with questions, prepositions, comparisons, related and "hidden" keywords, plus a 12-month Google Trends chart. No account needed. Signed-in paid users can run a full scan from the sidebar and see real search volumes. The newer part is more interesting: inside ChatGPT and Claude, a bar shows Google Trends, autocomplete questions and the "query fan-out" (the web queries the AI ran) for the topic you're chatting about. They say only the search query (or a short topic distilled locally from your prompt) is sent to their servers. When I checked (2026-10-03), the Chrome Web Store listing showed version 1.4.0, about 226 users and a single rating. ### MCP server and REST API Answer Socrates runs a hosted [[Model Context Protocol (MCP)]] server at `https://answersocrates.com/api/mcp`, plus a REST API. It works with [[Claude Code]], Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and Gemini CLI, and as a sign-in connector (no key) in claude.ai, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Tools exposed: - `get_rising_topics`: breakout and rising related searches for a topic - `get_trends`: 12-month interest for a basket of keywords, per country - `get_keywords`: a full pull (questions, prepositions, comparisons, A to Z autocomplete), usually 500 to 900 phrases - `cluster_keywords`: topic, intent and funnel-stage clustering (billed in cluster credits, not requests) - `save_to_project`, plus project listing and creation (free) - `get_usage`: remaining quota (free) There are also built-in `keyword_research` and `website_research` commands. API and MCP access starts at the Seneca plan. With it, keyword research can happen inside an AI writing session instead of in yet another browser tab. ## Data sources The 2020 Product Hunt maker comment describes a Node.js backend that scrapes Google suggestions through a pool of proxies and caches results behind Cloudflare (Svelte/Sapper front end). The About page says it combines Google suggest data, People Also Ask questions and trends data. A 2021 Hacker News comment describes it the same way: a tool that scrapes People Also Ask questions so bloggers can build FAQ-style articles from them. Sources disagree on scope. The current homepage says "Google, Bing, YouTube and AI models", while two reviews from 2025 and 2026 (Stuff With Words, The First Ranker) call it Google-only and list that as its main gap versus AnswerThePublic. I'd check before relying on non-Google data. ## Pricing From the official pricing page (checked 2026-10-03). 7-day money-back guarantee, Stripe checkout. | Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Main limits | |---|---|---|---| | Free | $0 | $0 | 3 keyword searches/day, 1 recursive search/day, 500 cluster credits/month, 1 CSV/month, Chrome extension. No metrics, no LLM tracker, no API/MCP | | Socrates Lite | $19 | $190 | 1,200 searches/yr, 36,000 cluster credits/yr, 600 LLM tracker credits/yr, metrics, unlimited CSV, 2 projects | | Seneca | $39 | $390 | 6,000 searches/yr, 144,000 cluster credits/yr, 2,400 LLM credits/yr, API + MCP (6,000 API credits/yr), 5 projects | | Aurelius | $69 | $690 | Unlimited searches, 480,000 cluster credits/yr, 6,000 LLM credits/yr, 30,000 API credits/yr, 10 projects, 2 seats | | Senate (teams) | $299 | $2,990 | Unlimited searches, 36,000 LLM credits/yr, 300,000 API credits/yr, 100 projects, 5 seats | Be careful with quoted prices: the same page's comparison table shows lower yearly per-month figures ($12.50, $24.17, $40.83) than the plan cards ($15.83, $32.50, $57.50). And reviews from 2025 to 2026 quote completely different tiers ($9, $15, $29, $49; 3 or 5 free searches a day; 1,500 or 3,000 free cluster credits). Pricing has clearly changed several times since the 2024 acquisition. ## Who's behind it - **Original makers (2020)**: launched on Product Hunt on 2020-12-01 by makers listed as Tobias and Yury. It finished #4 of the day (219 upvotes). Also posted on r/SideProject the same day - **Current owner (since October 2024)**: Jamie I.F., founder of increasing.com (a marketing and niche-site blog) and of Endorsely (SaaS affiliate software). He wrote on increasing.com that he bought it in 2024, rebuilt the keyword engine and added clustering, trending topics and recursive search - The Chrome Web Store lists the extension's developer as James Oliver The site claims "1M+ marketers" and a 4.9/5 rating "across 100's of reviews". Jamie's own post (January 2025) mentions 100,000+ sign-ups since the takeover. I couldn't verify either number independently. ## Who it's for Bloggers, niche-site owners, content marketers, SEO consultants and small agencies who need a content plan more than a full SEO suite. It has no backlink analysis, rank tracking or SERP analysis, so it complements tools like [[Ahrefs]] rather than replacing them. The free plan is enough for occasional topic research (e.g., finding the questions to answer in an article or a newsletter). ## Alternatives - **[[AnswerThePublic]]**: the tool that made question-based keyword research popular (acquired by Neil Patel's NP Digital in May 2022). Its strengths are the visual "search wheel" and, on paid plans, data from Bing, YouTube, Amazon, ChatGPT and Instagram. Its free plan is limited to a few searches a day. Paid plans start around €13.33/month billed yearly (official pricing page). Reviewers prefer Answer Socrates for raw output, clustering and CSV export, and AnswerThePublic for client presentations and multichannel data - **AlsoAsked**: focused purely on Google's People Also Ask data, shown as a mind map of parent and child questions. 3 free searches, paid plans from $12/month billed yearly (100 credits), deep search, bulk search and an API on higher tiers. It's narrower (PAA only, no clustering), but shows how questions chain together - **Keyword Sheeter**: fast bulk autocomplete lists, few metrics - **Full SEO suites**: [[Ahrefs]], Semrush, Moz. Much more data (difficulty, backlinks, SERPs) at a much higher price - **In-SERP extensions**: Keyword Surfer, Writesonic's extension ## Caveats Most detailed reviews I found are biased. The two longest "alternatives" and "review" posts are written by the owner (on answersocrates.com and increasing.com), The First Ranker says it runs a referral program for Answer Socrates, and Stuff With Words uses affiliate links. Their numbers (keywords per search, clustering accuracy, traffic gains) are directional at best. Don't confuse it with other "Ask Socrates" products: an AI document-analysis tool listed on creati.ai, a Socratic-dialogue chatbot on Lovable, or Martin Armstrong's "Socrates" forecasting platform (ask-socrates.com). ## References - https://answersocrates.com/ - https://answersocrates.com/about - https://answersocrates.com/pricing - https://answersocrates.com/extension - https://answersocrates.com/mcp - https://answersocrates.com/llm-brand-tracker - https://answersocrates.com/blog/answerthepublic-alternatives/ - https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/answer-socrates-%E2%80%94-keyword/decipbndjgmggffdnhgckcogjnojdnbk - https://www.producthunt.com/products/answer-socrates - https://www.reddit.com/r/SideProject/comments/k4jla7/answer_socrates_helps_you_find_content_ideas_to/ - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29470989 - https://increasing.com/answer-socrates-review/ - https://stuffwithwords.com/answer-socrates-review/ - https://stuffwithwords.com/answer-socrates-vs-alsoasked/ - https://www.thefirstranker.com/blog/answer-socrates-review-tested-feature/ - https://www.thefirstranker.com/blog/answer-socrates-vs-answer-the-public/ - https://answerthepublic.com/pricing - https://alsoasked.com/pricing - https://creati.ai/ai-tools/ask-socrates/ ## Related - [[Keyword Research]] - [[Search Engine Optimization (SEO)]] - [[AI SEO]] - [[Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)]] - [[Model Context Protocol (MCP)]] - [[Ahrefs]] - [[My Content Strategy]] - [[Socrates]]
