# Breadcrumbs plugin for Obsidian
Breadcrumbs is an [[Obsidian]] community plugin that adds typed relationships between notes (`up`, `down`, `next`, `prev`, or your own) and builds them into a hierarchy you can see and navigate. It was created by SkepticMystic and has been maintained by Michael Porter since May 2026.
It reads relationships from many sources, so you can keep the conventions you already use:
- properties, tags and Markdown lists
- folders (folder notes) and [[Dataview plugin for Obsidian|Dataview]] fields
- naming schemes: Dendron-style dotted names, Johnny.Decimal numbers, dates, or your own regular expression
It also infers the implied direction: if A is `up` of B, B is `down` of A, without you writing both.
Then it gives you several ways to navigate:
- a **trail** at the top of each note, showing its ancestors (like the breadcrumbs of a website)
- a **Tree** view in the sidebar and a **Matrix** view of all relations
- previous and next buttons for sequences (chapters, lessons, meeting series)
- code blocks that render a tree, a [[Mermaid]] diagram or a Markmap mind map
- an export to Canvas
The [[Graph view core plugin for Obsidian|core Graph view]] shows *that* two notes link. Breadcrumbs shows *how* they relate: which one is the parent, which one comes next. Breadcrumbs is read-only: you edit relationships in your notes, not in its views. [[Link Structure plugin for Obsidian|Link Structure]] takes a similar approach as a Bases view, with drag-and-drop re-parenting.
