# Bruce Perens
Bruce Perens is an American computer programmer and open source advocate who co-founded the [[Open Source Initiative (OSI)]] with [[Eric S. Raymond]] in 1998. He authored the Open Source Definition, adapting it from the Debian Free Software Guidelines he had written as Debian Project Leader. This definition became the standard for determining whether a license qualifies as "open source."
Perens was an early leader of the [[Debian]] project (1996-1997) and created the [[BusyBox]] embedded [[Linux]] toolkit. He has been a vocal advocate for open source in government and business, though he later distanced himself from OSI over disagreements about license proliferation and corporate influence in open source.
