# Choose your "hard"
When you design and implement systems, you can use friction as a tool. By removing friction, you can make things easier. By adding friction, you can make things harder.
By adding friction to things you want to do less/avoid/ignore, you can facilitate your task. For instance, if I want to focus, then by leaving my phone outside of the office, I add friction to the action I want to avoid, which is taking my phone and looking at it. On the other hand, if I remove friction from "paths" I want to facilitate, I increase my chances of following those. For example, if I make it a breeze to capture knowledge, then I will certainly do it more often.
Choosing your hard then means using friction wisely. Make the wrong things hard, and the right ones easy.
