# Cognition (AI Company)
Cognition is an AI company building software engineering agents. It is best known for [[Devin]], which it markets as the first autonomous AI software engineer, and it also owns the [[Windsurf]] AI coding IDE after acquiring it in 2025. The company was founded in 2023 and is led by co-founder and CEO [[Scott Wu]]; it was originally known as Cognition Labs.
Cognition's stated view is that AI should expand what engineers can do rather than replace them. The idea is a collaborator that absorbs repetitive work so people can spend their time on architecture and judgment. Devin is the clearest expression of that: it plans, writes, tests, and deploys code inside real codebases and team tools, and is pitched as something you delegate to like a remote teammate.
The company has scaled quickly. It took early money from Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, acquired Windsurf in July 2025 (which added roughly $82M in annual recurring revenue and more than 350 enterprise customers), and closed a $400M round in September 2025 at a $10.2B valuation. By April 2026 it was reported to be raising again at a target valuation near $25B.
