# Devin
Devin is an autonomous AI software engineer built by [[Cognition (AI Company)]]. It was announced in March 2024 and pitched as the first AI agent able to take on a full engineering task from start to finish: reading the codebase, planning the work, writing and testing code, and opening a pull request.
What separates Devin from editor-based assistants like [[GitHub Copilot]] is the interaction model. Instead of completing lines while you type, Devin works asynchronously. You assign it work through Slack, Linear, and GitHub the same way you would hand a task to a remote colleague, and it reports back once it has something. Cognition frames it as a teammate you manage rather than a tool you operate.
Devin's launch drew heavy attention, and a fair amount of skepticism about how much of its polished demo reflected real-world reliability. Cognition has since shipped steady iterations (Devin 2.x by early 2026) and says Devin is deployed inside large, complex enterprises. CEO [[Scott Wu]] has claimed Devin already writes a large share of the company's own code.
