# External File Linker plugin for Obsidian External File Linker, by kay607, lets you embed files that live outside your vault, as long as Obsidian can display them (Markdown, PDF, images, audio, video). The syntax is close to a regular embed: `![[external:path]]`. Groups make it work across devices. A group is a folder that sits at a different path on each device, like a Dropbox folder on Windows and on Android. You give each device its base path once, and an embed like `![[group:Dropbox/Contracts/Contract - ACME - 2026.pdf]]` resolves correctly wherever you open the note. It works on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS, which makes it the cross-device option.
