# Fresh Start Effect
Humans experience a psychological reset when a new time period begins. The past suddenly feels far behind, and what comes next feels exciting and full of possibility. This "new chapter" energy makes people itch to refresh everything.
The Fresh Start Effect is a cognitive bias where temporal landmarks (new week, new month, new quarter, new season, a birthday) create a sense of separation from past failures and a motivation to pursue goals. People are more likely to take action, start new habits, and make purchases when they perceive a fresh start.
In marketing, this means promotions timed to temporal landmarks convert better than those on arbitrary dates. Clothing brand Paige demonstrated this by sending a sales email on March 31st with the message "Start fresh this spring" and offering no discount at all. The timing itself was the hook.
