# Galaxy plugin for Obsidian
Galaxy View is an [[Obsidian]] community plugin by longwind1984 that shows your vault as a 3D galaxy: notes are glowing nodes, links are thin filaments, and the camera flies from note to note in a slowly rotating starfield. The author's pitch: "fly through your vault like NASA's Eyes on Asteroids." Desktop and mobile, MIT license.
It's the [[Graph view core plugin for Obsidian|core graph]] in 3D, with a camera. What you can do with it:
- Click a note and the camera flies to it, then orbits around it
- "Wander" takes you on an automatic tour; "Connect two" flies the shortest link path between two notes
- Focus mode dims everything except a note's neighborhood (optionally two links deep) and shows a card with its backlinks, tags and a snippet
- Fly freely with `WASD`, `Q` and `E`; `F`, `R` and `Esc` are shortcuts
- Filter by clicking a top-level folder to hide it, or with name patterns like `-file:Index`
- Turn on tags (off by default) for a Tag Lens, tag colors and up to 50 tag hubs
- `.canvas` files are part of the graph. Obsidian doesn't expose Canvas metadata to plugins, so it reads each Canvas JSON and treats file cards as links
There are eight style presets (Galaxy, Spiral, Orbits, Deep Field, Nebula, Minimal, Fireworks, Supernova), your own saved presets, color themes, and physics sliders (repulsion, link distance, center pull, a "flatten" force that makes a spiral disc). It can reuse the color groups of the core graph from `.obsidian/graph.json`.
The author claims 3,000+ notes and 20,000+ links at 60 fps, with the force simulation in a Web Worker so the UI doesn't freeze. On mobile it only shows the 1,500 most connected notes. No network requests, no telemetry.
Open it from the orbit icon in the ribbon or with the "Open galaxy view" command.
Is it useful for finding things? Not much. Like the global graph, a whole-vault galaxy is mostly decoration in a big vault, a beautiful one. Focus mode and "Connect two" are the practical parts: they answer "what's around this note?" and "how are these two notes connected?". For daily navigation, the local graph and [[Graph Explorer Base View plugin for Obsidian|Graph Explorer Base View]] do more. Use Galaxy View to show off your vault, or to rediscover clusters you forgot.
It's young (version 0.6.1, July 2026, about 16k downloads) and maintained by a single developer.
