# Implementation intentions An implementation intention is a plan in the form "if situation X happens, then I will do Y". Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer introduced the idea to explain why good intentions so often fail to turn into action. A goal says *what* you want ("I want to write more"); an implementation intention says *when, where and how* you will act ("When I sit at my desk after breakfast, I'll write for 30 minutes"). The plan hands control of the action to a cue in the environment. When the situation comes up, the response starts almost automatically, without having to remember or decide. This helps with the usual failure points: not getting started, getting distracted, or giving in to old habits. The evidence is strong. A 2006 meta-analysis of 94 independent tests found a medium-to-large effect on goal attainment (d = .65). A larger 2024 meta-analysis of 642 tests confirmed the effect across cognitive, emotional and behavioral outcomes, with smaller sizes (d between .27 and .66 depending on the outcome). Plans worked best when they used the explicit if-then format, when people were really motivated by the goal, and when they rehearsed the plan. Why it matters: a to-do item like "work on report" is a goal, not a plan. Turning tasks into concrete next actions tied to a time or place ("Tuesday 9:00, outline section 2") is an implementation intention, and that is what moves work forward. ## References - Gollwitzer, P.
