# Internet Society (ISOC) The Internet Society (ISOC) is an American non-profit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, access, and policy. It was announced by [[Vint Cerf]], [[Bob Kahn]], and Lyman Chapin as a professional society to facilitate, support, and promote the evolution of the Internet as a global communications infrastructure. The organization was created primarily to provide institutional and financial support for the [[Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)]] Secretariat after NSF funding ended in 1991. Vint Cerf served as founding president from 1992 to 1995. ISOC provides an organizational home for the IETF, the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), and the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF). The organization is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, with chapters worldwide. In 2002, ISOC successfully bid for the .org registry and formed the Public Interest Registry (PIR) to manage it. In 2012, on its 20th anniversary, ISOC established the Internet Hall of Fame to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the Internet's development—[[Scott Bradner]] was inducted in 2014 for his extensive IETF leadership. ## Related - [[Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)]] - [[Vint Cerf]] - [[Bob Kahn]] - [[Scott Bradner]] - [[RFC 2119]] ## References - https://www.internetsociety.org - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Society - https://www.internetsociety.org/history/
