# LATCH
LATCH was coined by [[Richard Saul Wurman]] in [[Information Anxiety (book)]].
LATCH is an acronym aiming to remind us about the 5 ways to organize information, also known as the [[Five Hat Racks]]:
- Location: organizing by geographical or spatial references
- Examples: maps, trains
- Alphabet: organizing alphabetically (e.g., A-Z)
- Examples: dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia
- Ideal for non-linear information
- Time: organizing by chronological sequence (e.g., using dates and timestamps)
- Examples: calendars, time tables, timelines, process steps
- Category: organizing by relatedness
- Hierarchy: organizing by comparisons
- Examples: list of cities sorted by size, number of inhabitants, etc
