# Law of staleness
The value of information declines rapidly as it ages. While fresh information like today's news may be very valuable, its relevance, and value, quickly diminish. In addition, new information can quickly become outdated, be proven incorrect, or turn out to be of poor quality. Content that has been published less than a year ago has a very low probability of standing the [[Test of time]].
Interestingly, the value of information sometimes increases as it gets older. This can be due to its rarity (e.g., very old manuscripts) or to its timelessness. For instance, the wisdom from ancient philosophers such as [[Socrates]], [[Aristotle]] has now become invaluable. That effect is known as the [[Lindy effect]].
