# MCP Tools plugin for Obsidian
MCP Tools (plugin id `mcp-tools`, by jacksteamdev) connected an Obsidian vault to [[Model Context Protocol (MCP)]] clients such as Claude Desktop. It exposed vault access, semantic search (through the [[Smart Connections plugin for Obsidian]]) and [[Templater plugin for Obsidian|Templater]] prompts to AI assistants. It relied on the [[Local REST API plugin for Obsidian]] and installed a separate MCP server binary.
**Status: archived.** The GitHub repository is archived (last release 2026-05-13), and the official plugin directory says "This plugin has been archived and is no longer available" (it has been removed from the community plugins list). It had about 90,000 downloads. Don't install it in new setups.
Alternatives:
- The MCP server built into the [[Local REST API plugin for Obsidian]]
- MCP Connector (`mcp-tools-istefox`), an actively maintained fork: in-process MCP server, on-device semantic search, per-client tokens (desktop only; its tool list changes often between versions)
- The [[Obsidian CLI REST MCP plugin for Obsidian]], which exposes the official Obsidian CLI as an MCP server
Not to be confused with [[mcptools]], a command-line client for MCP servers.
