# Map View plugin for Obsidian
Map View is an [[Obsidian]] community plugin by esm7. It finds geolocations and paths in your notes and puts them on an interactive map, so you find notes by *place*. Travel notes, restaurants, client sites, the places in a novel: you point at the map instead of remembering a name.
It's been around much longer than the official [[Maps plugin for Obsidian|Maps plugin]] (which adds the [[Map view core plugin for Obsidian|Map view]] to Bases), and it does a lot more:
- Add locations from a search, from the map, from external mapping services, or from your device's GPS
- Show paths in GeoJSON, GPX, KML and TCX formats, and draw locations and shapes in Edit Mode
- Calculate routes between points (driving, cycling, walking)
- Style markers (icons, badges, colors) with display rules
- Filter markers with a boolean query language
- Embed live maps in notes, and save maps for offline use
It now integrates with [[Obsidian Bases]] too. If all you need is "notes with coordinates on a map", start with the official Maps plugin; Map View is for when you want a real GIS (geographic information system) in your vault.
