# Project Management Institute (PMI)
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a non-profit professional association for project management, founded in 1969 in the United States.
It publishes the [[Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)|PMBOK Guide]], one of the main project management standards (the 8th edition came out in November 2025), and runs the best-known project management certifications, such as the Project Management Professional (PMP).
PMI defines a project as "a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result". "Temporary" means the project has a beginning and an end; "unique" means it produces something that doesn't exist yet, which is what separates a project from routine, ongoing work.
