# Similarity plugin for Obsidian Similarity is an [[Obsidian]] community plugin by Joram Millenaar that finds notes by meaning ([[Semantic Search|semantic search]]) and shows the notes related to the one you're reading. It uses a tiny AI model that runs fully on your device, so your notes never leave your machine. Its author's pitch: "Notes are never truly orphaned… they still surface when I write something similar." That's the use case: discovery while you write, more than finding a note you already know exists. The author also says it's especially good for journaling. What makes it stand out is privacy: you don't need any API key, it makes no network calls after install, and it has no telemetry. It also works on mobile. The trade-off is the size of the model. A tiny model means lower recall than [[Smart Connections plugin for Obsidian|Smart Connections]], but it's the privacy-first pick and a good fit for a phone. Keep in mind that the index holds [[Embeddings|embeddings]] of your notes, and short texts can be recovered from embeddings, so treat it as sensitively as the notes themselves. It's young and hasn't been manually reviewed by Obsidian staff yet. ## References - Source code: https://github.com/jorammillenaar/obsidian-similarity - Community plugin page: https://obsidian.md/plugins?id=similarity ## Related - [[The Complete Guide to Obsidian Search - Find Any Note When You Need It (Article)]] - [[AI Search for Your Obsidian Vault - Keyword, Semantic, Hybrid and Agentic Search Explained (Article)]] - [[Semantic Search]] - [[Embeddings]] - [[On-Device Machine Learning]] - [[Smart Connections plugin for Obsidian]] - [[Seek plugin for Obsidian]] - [[Hybrid Search plugin for Obsidian]]
