# Smart AudioBook Player
Smart AudioBook Player is an Android app that plays audiobook files you already have. It doesn't sell books and it doesn't stream them. You bring the files (DRM-free MP3 or M4B, for instance), and it gives you a player built for 20-hour books instead of 3-minute songs. It's made by Alex Kravchenko and has a high rating on the Play Store.
Why care? Because most audiobook apps are storefronts first. For audiobooks, I've used Audible and Spotify, and both work the same way: you get access to a catalog, inside their app, for as long as they agree. Smart AudioBook Player turns that around. The files sit on your phone, in a folder you control, and the app is just the thing that reads them. Same idea as the [[File over app principle]] I apply to my notes: if the app disappears tomorrow, your library is still there. The catch is obvious; you need files you actually own. Audible's files are DRM-protected, so they won't play here.
The setup is old-school, and that's fine. You copy your books into a root folder called "My Audiobooks", with one subfolder per book (even when the book is a single file), then refresh the library. Each subfolder becomes a book.
What makes it good for long-form listening:
- **Playback speed and bookmarks**, the basics.
- **A character list** you fill in yourself. Sounds silly until you're 9 books into a fantasy series and can't remember who that guy was.
- **A sleep timer** that pauses when you fall asleep. Shake the phone and it picks up where it stopped.
- **Skip silence**, which cuts gaps longer than 0.5 seconds (added in 11.4.1).
- **Chromecast** support and a home-screen widget.
- **Modern Android behavior**: version 11.4.4 (May 2025) added quick-scroll, edge-to-edge display and predictive back on Android 15+. Development hasn't stopped since then; APKMirror lists builds up to 11.9.0 as of October 2026.
On pricing, you get a 30-day trial of the full version, after which it falls back to a basic one. Unlocking the full version is a one-time purchase from the Help menu (historically around $2 plus tax). There's NO subscription. The current price and version are worth checking on the Play Store, since my sources are APKMirror release notes and a review.
It pairs naturally with tools that produce audiobook files. [[Audiblez]] and [[ebook2audiobook]] turn DRM-free e-books into M4B or MP3 files through text-to-speech, and this is the kind of player you'd drop the output into. On the reading side, [[KOReader]] does the same job for e-books: it reads the files you own instead of locking you into a store.
