# Smart Lookup plugin for Obsidian
Smart Lookup, by [[Brian Petro]] (the author of [[Smart Connections plugin for Obsidian|Smart Connections]]), is a [[Semantic Search|semantic search]] box for your vault. You describe what you're looking for in plain language, and it finds notes by meaning, even when they don't contain the words you typed. You can then preview the matches, open them, link them or copy them as context.
It's the query-first counterpart of Smart Connections, and the same Lookup feature also exists inside Smart Connections. The author's own rule of thumb sums up the split:
- Current note → Smart Connections
- Question → Smart Lookup
- Exact phrase → Obsidian search
Gotcha: semantic results don't behave like text search. A note containing the exact text might not appear, so keep [[Search core plugin for Obsidian|core Search]] for exact words, file names, tags and regex. Obsidian staff haven't reviewed it manually yet.
