# Zotero A free and open source reference manager for collecting, organizing, annotating, and citing research sources. Zotero captures papers, books, and web pages with one click through its browser connector, stores PDFs alongside their metadata, and generates citations and bibliographies in thousands of styles. Libraries sync across devices and can be shared with groups. Its annotation workflow matters most for knowledge management: the built-in PDF reader highlights and notes stay attached to the source item, and the Better BibTeX extension gives every item a stable citation key.
