# Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States (1861-1865) and is widely considered one of America's greatest presidents. He led the nation through the American Civil War, successfully defending the Union against the Confederate States. Lincoln is most known for his role in abolishing slavery, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the Thirteenth Amendment. His presidency was marked by extraordinary challenges, including preserving the Union during its greatest constitutional, military, and moral crisis. Lincoln was assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the Civil War's effective end.
