# Anne Frank Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank (June 12, 1929 – February/March 1945) was a German-born Jewish girl who gained worldwide posthumous fame for the diary she kept while hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne moved to Amsterdam with her family in 1934 when the Nazis rose to power. When World War II reached the Netherlands in 1940, the Frank family was trapped. Anne received her first diary on her 13th birthday in June 1942, and a month later the family went into hiding in a secret annex behind her father Otto's business at 263 Prinsengracht Street. For over two years, Anne documented their daily life in hiding, expressing her thoughts, fears, hopes, and dreams with remarkable insight and maturity. On August 4, 1944, the family was discovered and arrested, then deported to concentration camps. Anne and her sister Margot died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945, just weeks before its liberation.
