# Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ![[50 Resources/51 Attachments/51.03 Public/2026-05-04 Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.jpg|400]] Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, vicomte de Saint-Exupéry (June 29, 1900 – July 31, 1944) was a French writer, poet, journalist, and aviator. Born in Lyon to an aristocratic family, Saint-Exupéry is best known for his novella "The Little Prince" (Le Petit Prince), one of the most-translated books in the world. Trained as a commercial pilot in the early 1920s, Saint-Exupéry worked airmail routes across Europe, Africa, and South America, pioneering international postal flight in the days when aircraft had few instruments. His aviation experiences deeply influenced his literary work, including "Night Flight," "Wind, Sand and Stars," and "Flight to Arras." During World War II, Saint-Exupéry joined the French Air Force and flew reconnaissance missions until France's armistice with Germany in 1940. He lived in exile in the United States from 1941 to 1943, where he wrote "The Little Prince," before returning to combat with the Free French Air Force. On July 31, 1944, during a reconnaissance mission over Corsica, Saint-Exupéry's plane disappeared and is presumed to have crashed. Debris was discovered near Marseille in 2000, but the cause remains unknown. Saint-Exupéry received numerous awards including the Legion of Honour, the prix Femina, and the U.S. National Book Award.
