She was a self-described "Black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, mother, warrior, poet" who dedicated her life to confronting different forms of injustice. Born in New York City to Caribbean immigrants from Barbados and Grenada, Lorde grew up in Harlem. She was legally blind from nearsightedness and learned to communicate through poetry from an early age. She attended Hunter College High School and later Hunter College, graduating in 1959, then earned a master's degree in library science from Columbia University in 1961. Lorde worked as a librarian while developing her voice as a poet and activist. In 1968, she taught at Tougaloo College in Mississippi, where her interactions with young Black students during the civil rights era deeply influenced her work. She later taught at John Jay College and Hunter College, fighting for the creation of Black studies departments. As a founding member of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the first U.S. publisher for women of color, Lorde helped amplify marginalized voices. Her notable works include "The First Cities," "Zami: A New Spelling of My Name," and "The Cancer Journals." She was known for her powerful spoken word delivery and technical mastery in addressing civil rights, feminism, lesbianism, and Black female identity. ## Quotes <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Audre Lorde]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> <!-- SerializedQuery: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Audre Lorde]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> - [[Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me]] - [[When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid]] <!-- SerializedQuery END --> ## Books <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #books AND [[Audre Lorde]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC -->
