Audrey Kathleen Hepburn (4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) was a British actress and humanitarian. Recognized as a film and fashion icon, she was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third-greatest female screen legend from Classical Hollywood cinema and is one of the few entertainers to achieve EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards).
Born into an aristocratic family in Brussels, Belgium, Hepburn spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, the UK, and the Netherlands. During World War II, she studied ballet and performed to raise money for the Dutch resistance. She began her career as a chorus girl in West End musical theatre before transitioning to film.
Hepburn rose to stardom in "Roman Holiday" (1953) alongside Gregory Peck, becoming the first actress to win an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for a single performance. She went on to star in iconic films including "Sabrina" (1954), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), "My Fair Lady" (1964), and "Wait Until Dark" (1967).
Later in life, Hepburn devoted much of her time to UNICEF, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador from 1989 until her death. Between 1988 and 1992, she worked in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America, and Asia. In December 1992, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her humanitarian work. She died of appendix cancer at her home in Switzerland at age 63.
