# BJ Fogg
Brian Jeffrey Fogg (born 1963) is an American behavioral scientist and founder of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University. He created the **Fogg Behavior Model** (B=MAP: Behavior = Motivation × Ability × Prompt), which has become foundational in understanding how to design for behavior change. His 2019 book *Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything* popularized his approach of starting with behaviors so small they're almost trivial, then letting them grow naturally. Fogg's work bridges academic research and practical application in product design, health interventions, and personal development.
Fogg pioneered the field of "[[Persuasive Technology]]"—using technology to change attitudes and behaviors—and literally wrote the textbook (*Persuasive Technology*, 2003). His Stanford courses have trained many influential tech designers, including [[Nir Eyal]] and Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger. While Fogg intended his work to help people build positive habits, he's acknowledged concern about its use in addictive product design. His Tiny Habits method emphasizes starting extremely small ("After I brush my teeth, I will floss one tooth"), anchoring new behaviors to existing routines, and celebrating immediately to create positive emotions that wire in habits.

## B=MAP Components
| Component | Description | Design Implication |
|-----------|-------------|-------------------|
| **Motivation** | Desire to do behavior | Tap into existing motivation |
| **Ability** | Capacity to do behavior | Make it easier |
| **Prompt** | Trigger that initiates | Time it right |
## Motivation Factors
| Factor | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| **Pleasure/Pain** | Seek pleasure, avoid pain |
| **Hope/Fear** | Anticipation of outcomes |
| **Acceptance/Rejection** | Social belonging |
## Ability Chain (Simplicity Factors)
| Factor | Make it Easier By |
|--------|-------------------|
| **Time** | Reduce time required |
| **Money** | Reduce cost |
| **Physical effort** | Reduce exertion |
| **Mental effort** | Reduce thinking |
| **Social deviance** | Make it socially acceptable |
| **Non-routine** | Fit existing patterns |
## Tiny Habits Method

│ │
│ Example: │
│ After I pour my morning coffee, │
│ I will open my journal, │
│ then I will say "I'm awesome!" │
│ │
│ Rules: │
│ • Anchor to existing routine │
│ • Make behavior TINY (30 seconds or less) │
│ • Celebrate IMMEDIATELY (creates positive emotion) │
│ • Let it grow naturally over time │
