# Bill Moggridge ![[50 Resources/51 Attachments/51.03 Public/2026-05-04 Bill Moggridge.jpg|400]] Bill Moggridge (1943-2012) was a British industrial designer who co-founded IDEO and is credited with designing the first laptop computer, the GRiD Compass 1101 (1982). Along with [[Bill Verplank]], he coined the term [[Interaction Design (IxD)]] in the mid-1980s to describe the emerging discipline of designing how people interact with digital products. Moggridge was a pioneer in recognizing that designing behavior and experience was as important as designing physical form. Moggridge studied industrial design at the Central School of Art and Design in London before founding his own consultancy, Moggridge Associates (later ID Two), in 1979. In 1991, ID Two merged with David Kelley Design and Matrix Product Design to form IDEO, which became the world's most influential design consultancy. His 2007 book *Designing Interactions* documented the history of interaction design through interviews with pioneers. In 2010, he became director of the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, serving until his death from cancer in 2012. ## Key Contributions | Contribution | Year | Significance | |--------------|------|--------------| | **GRiD Compass 1101** | 1982 | First clamshell laptop computer | | **Coined "Interaction Design"** | ~1984 | With [[Bill Verplank]], named the field | | **Co-founded IDEO** | 1991 | Premier design consultancy | | **Designing Interactions** | 2007 | Definitive history of IxD | | **Cooper-Hewitt Director** | 2010 | Elevated design's cultural status | ## Timeline | Year | Event | |------|-------| | 1943 | Born in London, England | | 1965 | Graduated Central School of Art and Design | | 1969 | Founded Moggridge Associates (London) | | 1979 | Founded ID Two (Palo Alto) | | 1982 | GRiD Compass laptop released | | ~1984 | Coined "interaction design" with Verplank | | 1991 | IDEO formed from merger | | 2007 | *Designing Interactions* published | | 2010 | Director of Cooper-Hewitt Museum | | 2012 | Died in San Francisco | ## Design Philosophy | Principle | Description | |-----------|-------------| | **Behavior matters** | Design how products behave, not just look | | **User-centered** | Understand people before designing | | **Prototyping** | Make ideas tangible quickly | | **Storytelling** | Communicate through narrative | | **Interdisciplinary** | Combine industrial, graphic, and software design | ## IDEO Legacy | Innovation | Description | |------------|-------------| | **Design Thinking** | Human-centered innovation process | | **Prototyping culture** | "Fail early to succeed sooner" | | **T-shaped people** | Depth in one area, breadth across many | | **Empathy research** | Deep user understanding | | **Cross-disciplinary teams** | Engineers + designers + anthropologists | ## Notable Works (IDEO) | Product | Client | Year | |---------|--------|------| | Apple Mouse | Apple | 1980 | | Palm V | Palm | 1999 | | Steelcase Leap Chair | Steelcase | 1999 | | Oral-B toothbrush | Oral-B | Various | | Prada store experience | Prada | 2001 | ## Awards and Recognition | Award | Year | |-------|------| | **Prince Philip Designers Prize** | 2010 | | **AIGA Medal** | 2009 | | **Chrysler Design Award** | 1999 | | **Smithsonian National Design Award** | (posthumous honoree) | ## Quotes <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Bill Moggridge]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> ## Books <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #type/book AND [[Bill Moggridge]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> ## References - Moggridge, B.
