# Confucius

Confucius (551-479 BC) was a Chinese philosopher, politician, and teacher whose teachings have deeply influenced Chinese culture and philosophy for over two millennia. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity. Confucius founded Confucianism, a system of philosophical and ethical teachings that became the state ideology of China for centuries.
Born Kong Qiu in the state of Lu (present-day Shandong Province), Confucius lived during the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. He believed that education and self-cultivation were the keys to virtue and that a virtuous society could be achieved through proper relationships between people, respect for elders, and moral leadership.
