# David L Goodstein American physicist (1939–2024) and Vice Provost at the California Institute of Technology, where he also held the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professorship. Widely known for *The Mechanical Universe*, the celebrated PBS physics television course, and for his books on scientific ethics and on energy depletion (*Out of Gas*).
