# Dieter Rams
Dieter Rams (born 1932) is a German industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun and the furniture company Vitsoe. His work has profoundly influenced modern product design and technology aesthetics—most notably inspiring [[Jony Ive]]'s designs at Apple. Rams served as head of design at Braun from 1961 to 1995, where his functionalist approach produced iconic products like the SK 4 record player, T3 pocket radio, and countless calculators and appliances.
Rams is best known for his "Ten Principles of Good Design" (also called "Ten Commandments"), developed in the late 1970s as he questioned whether his work was contributing positively to the world. These principles—emphasizing innovation, usefulness, aesthetics, understandability, unobtrusiveness, honesty, longevity, thoroughness, environmental friendliness, and minimalism—remain the definitive statement of design philosophy. His motto "Weniger, aber besser" (Less, but better) captures his approach. The 2018 documentary *Rams* by Gary Hustwit explored his life and enduring influence.
