# Haruki Murakami

Haruki Murakami (村上 春樹; born January 12, 1949) is a Japanese writer whose novels, essays, and short stories have been bestsellers in Japan and internationally. His work has been translated into 50 languages and has sold millions of copies outside Japan.
Born in Kyoto and raised in Kobe, Murakami studied drama at Waseda University in Tokyo. He owned a jazz bar called Peter Cat from 1974 to 1981 before beginning his writing career at age 29. His notable works include "Norwegian Wood" (1987), "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" (1994-95), "Kafka on the Shore" (2002), and "1Q84" (2009-10). His writing is known for its magical realist elements and has received numerous awards including the Franz Kafka Prize and Jerusalem Prize.
