Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. One of the most widely read German-language authors of the 20th century, he explored themes of self-discovery, individualism, spirituality, and the tension between the bourgeois world and the inner life. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946.
Hesse's work was deeply influenced by Eastern philosophy (particularly Indian and Chinese thought), psychoanalysis (he underwent Jungian analysis), and the Romantic tradition. His protagonists typically undergo a journey of inner awakening — rejecting convention to seek a more authentic self.
