He rose to prominence with "Hell's Angels" (1967) and is best known for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1972). Thompson established "Gonzo journalism," a style in which the writer becomes central to and participant in the narrative. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Thompson served in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his journalism career. He became known for his intense dislike of Richard Nixon and his coverage of the 1972 presidential campaign. Thompson had a lifelong use of alcohol and drugs, a love of firearms, and an iconoclastic contempt for authority. He died by suicide at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, in 2005. ## Quotes <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Hunter S.
