Ian Murdock was an American software developer best known as the founder of [[Debian]] (1993), one of the most influential [[Linux]] distributions. The name "Debian" combines his then-girlfriend Debra's name with his own. He wrote the Debian Manifesto, which outlined his vision for an open, community-driven Linux distribution.
Beyond Debian, Murdock made significant contributions to open source infrastructure. He founded the Linux Standard Base (LSB) initiative to improve compatibility across distributions, and later led Project Indiana at Sun Microsystems to create a user-friendly OpenSolaris distribution.
