# Ido Portal
Ido Portal (born May 1, 1980) is an Israeli movement coach, martial artist, and creator of the "Movement Culture" philosophy. Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, Portal has become a globally recognized expert in movement education and training.
## Background
Portal began his journey in traditional martial arts at an early age, later discovering capoeira at 15, which sparked his lifelong obsession with movement. He earned the nickname "The Missionary" for his radical dedication to capoeira and established an academy in his family home's basement.
Feeling constrained by the limits of any single martial art, Portal embarked on a global quest to study various movement disciplines. Unable to find a comprehensive "movement teacher," he decided to become one himself, traveling worldwide to learn from experts in gymnastics, dance, martial arts, circus performance, and physical therapy.
## Movement Culture Philosophy
Portal developed the "Movement Culture" philosophy, which emphasizes:
- Integration of multiple movement disciplines
- Play as a fundamental training tool
- Breaking free from hyperspecialization
- Developing "physical literacy" across various domains
- Training the brain through complex movement patterns
## Notable Work
Portal gained widespread recognition as movement coach to UFC fighter Conor McGregor from 2015 onwards. He has worked with elite athletes across various sports including NBA players, Olympic swimmers, and MLB players. Star athletes reportedly pay Portal six-figure sums for intensive training sessions.
He founded movement schools and conducts "Movement Camps" - annual events bringing together practitioners from different disciplines to share knowledge and train together.
