Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, was a pioneer of the Beat Generation. ## Background Of French-Canadian parentage, Kerouac was raised in a French-speaking home in Lowell, Massachusetts. He learned English at age six and spoke with a marked accent into his late teens. During World War II, he served as a United States Merchant Mariner and later briefly in the Navy before being discharged on psychiatric grounds. ## Literary Career Kerouac's first published book was "The Town and the City" (1950), but he achieved widespread fame and notoriety with his second novel, "On the Road" (1957), which made him a Beat icon. He went on to publish 12 more novels and numerous poetry volumes. ### Notable Works - **On the Road** (1957) - His most famous novel - **The Dharma Bums** (1958) - **Big Sur** (1962) - **Desolation Angels** (1965) - **Visions of Gerard** (1963) ## Writing Style Kerouac is recognized for his style of stream of consciousness spontaneous prose. Thematically, his work covers topics such as his Catholic spirituality, jazz, travel, promiscuity, life in New York City, Buddhism, drugs, and poverty. ## Legacy Kerouac became an underground celebrity and, with other Beats, a progenitor of the hippie movement. He has a lasting legacy, greatly influencing many cultural icons of the 1960s, including Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Jerry Garcia, and the Doors. Since his death in 1969, his literary prestige has grown, and several previously unseen works have been published. ## Quotes <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Jack Kerouac]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> <!-- SerializedQuery: LIST FROM #type/quote AND [[Jack Kerouac]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC --> - [[One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple]] <!-- SerializedQuery END --> ## Books <!-- QueryToSerialize: LIST FROM #books AND [[Jack Kerouac]] WHERE public_note = true SORT file.name ASC -->
