Jakob Nielsen is a Danish-American usability consultant and co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group (with [[Don Norman]]). Often called "the king of usability," he is best known for his 10 Usability Heuristics; principles that have guided interface design since 1994. His work at Sun Microsystems, Bell Communications Research, and IBM Research shaped modern approaches to [[User Experience (UX)]] and [[Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)]].
Nielsen holds a Ph.D. in human-computer interaction from the Technical University of Denmark and has authored influential books including *Designing Web Usability* (2000) and *Usability Engineering* (1993). His weekly "Alertbox" column (1995-2020) was one of the longest-running UX publications. He advocates for discount usability engineering—practical, low-cost methods that any team can apply; and has consistently pushed for user-centered design over aesthetic trends.
## The 10 Usability Heuristics
Nielsen's heuristics for interface design (1994):
| # | Heuristic | Description |
|---|-----------|-------------|
| 1 | **Visibility of system status** | Keep users informed through timely feedback |
| 2 | **Match with real world** | Use familiar language and conventions |
| 3 | **User control and freedom** | Provide undo, redo, and clear exits |
| 4 | **Consistency and standards** | Follow platform conventions |
| 5 | **Error prevention** | Design to prevent errors before they occur |
| 6 | **Recognition over recall** | Minimize memory load with visible options |
| 7 | **Flexibility and efficiency** | Provide shortcuts for expert users |
| 8 | **Aesthetic and minimalist design** | Remove irrelevant information |
| 9 | **Help users recognize errors** | Clear error messages with solutions |
| 10 | **Help and documentation** | Provide searchable, task-focused help |

## Jakob's Law
> "Users spend most of their time on other sites. This means that users prefer your site to work the same way as all the other sites they already know."
This principle argues for following established conventions rather than innovating interface patterns unnecessarily.
