Joseph John Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was an American writer and professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience, and he is best known for his theory of the "monomyth" or "Hero's Journey."
His best-known work is [[The Hero with a Thousand Faces (book)]], which discusses the journey of the archetypal hero and introduced the concept of the monomyth - a common template of stories that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, faces a crisis, wins a victory, and comes home transformed.
