# Mary Higgins Clark
American suspense novelist (1927–2020), known as the "Queen of Suspense." Wrote 51 best-sellers; every one of her books remained in print at the time of her death, with over 100 million copies sold in the United States alone. Broke through in 1975 with *Where Are the Children?*, which set the template for her brand of domestic suspense centered on women in jeopardy. Other landmarks include *A Stranger Is Watching*, *The Cradle Will Fall*, and *I'll Be Seeing You*. Frequently co-wrote with her daughter Carol Higgins Clark and later with Alafair Burke. The Mystery Writers of America established the Mary Higgins Clark Award in her honor in 2001, given annually to a novel in her tradition. A devout Catholic and a grandmother of seventeen; widely credited with proving that "clean" suspense (no gore, no graphic sex) could outsell almost everything else on the shelf.
