Regina Barzilay is the School of Engineering Distinguished Professor for AI and Health at MIT, and AI faculty lead for the MIT Jameel Clinic for Machine Learning in Health. She is one of the leading researchers bringing AI into medicine, particularly cancer screening and drug discovery.
Her group developed breast-cancer risk models that outperform traditional clinical tools, and she co-leads work on antibiotic discovery that identified novel compounds (including the widely discussed Halicin) using machine learning. She has also made foundational contributions to natural language processing.
Barzilay is a MacArthur Fellow and received the inaugural AAAI Squirrel AI Award for AI for the Benefit of Humanity in 2020. She is a personal cancer survivor — a pivotal experience that redirected her work toward health.
