D. Richard Hipp is an American software developer best known as the creator of [[SQLite]], the most widely deployed database engine in the world.
He started SQLite in 2000 while working on a battleship damage control system for the US Navy, needing a database that required zero configuration. Hipp founded Hwaci (Hipp, Wyrick & Company, Inc.) to support SQLite development. He also created Fossil, a distributed version control system that uses SQLite for storage. Hipp is known for his pragmatic approach to software development and his decision to release SQLite into the public domain, making it freely available for any use.
