# Scott Bradner

Scott O. Bradner is an American computer networking pioneer who advanced early Internet infrastructure through decades of technical leadership at Harvard University and instrumental roles in global standards bodies like the [[Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)]] and [[Internet Society (ISOC)]].
## Career at Harvard University
Bradner joined Harvard around 1966, contributing to the design and operation of its initial data networks amid the [[ARPANET]]'s emergence. He became involved in Harvard's networking efforts shortly after its connection to the ARPANET in 1970-1971, receiving his first email address on the ARPANET in 1972. Until his retirement in July 2016, he served as University Technology Security Officer at Harvard.
## Regional Network Development
He was involved in the design of the original Harvard data networks, the Longwood Medical Area network (LMAnet), and the New England Academic and Research Network (NEARnet). He was the founding chair of the technical committees of LMAnet, NEARnet, and the Corporation for Research and Enterprise Network (CoREN).
## IETF Leadership
Bradner held numerous leadership positions in the IETF:
- Co-director of the Operational Requirements Area (1993-1997)
- Co-director of the IPng Area (1993-1996)
- Co-director of the Transport Area (1997-2003)

Bradner has authored over 46 RFCs, with over 4,400 citations. His most recognized work is [[RFC 2119]], which defines the normative language used in RFCs (MUST, SHALL, SHOULD, MAY, etc.).
