# William Penn

English Quaker leader, writer, and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania (1644-1718). Son of Admiral Sir William Penn. Advocate of religious freedom and democratic principles that later influenced the United States Constitution.
## Life
- **Early years**: Born in London. Educated at Chigwell grammar school, then Oxford (expelled in 1662 for religious nonconformity). Studied law at Lincoln's Inn
- **Conversion**: Joined the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) at age 22 after hearing Thomas Loe preach in Ireland. Imprisoned multiple times for his faith
- **Writer and advocate**: Wrote over 40 tracts on religious doctrine and practice during the 1670s. Advocated for religious tolerance and civil liberties
- **Founding Pennsylvania** (1681): King Charles II granted Penn a large territory to settle a debt owed to his father. Penn established it as a refuge for Quakers and other persecuted religious minorities
- **Government**: Gave Pennsylvania a written constitution limiting government power, a humane penal code, and guarantees of fundamental liberties. Established peaceful relations with the Lenape people through negotiated treaties

- Pioneered equal rights for people of different races and religions in a large-scale society
- Planned the city of Philadelphia on a grid layout, a model for American urban planning
- His democratic framework influenced the framers of the U.S. Constitution
