# Background mind
The background mind keeps working on problems while your attention is somewhere else entirely. It's the one that hands you the answer in the shower, on a walk, in the middle of the night, or three days later while you're doing the dishes. [[Rich Hickey]] contrasted it with the [[Waking mind]] in [[Hammock Driven Development]].
Three properties matter.
**It makes connections the waking mind refuses to consider.** No filter for "that's silly", no commitment to the path you were already on. This is where the [[Eureka effect]] comes from.
**It works offline, so its capacity isn't capped the way [[Working Memory]] is.** It can hold a problem for weeks. Try that consciously and you'll last about four minutes.
**It only works on what you gave it.** This is the part people skip. The background mind is not a genie and it does not go find the problem for you. If you never loaded the facts, the unknowns, and the constraints, it has nothing to chew on and you'll get nothing back. Idleness without loading is just idleness.
That last point is the whole reason [[Hammock Driven Development]] has steps before the hammock.
Feeding it well:
- State the problem in writing, in one sentence
- List what you know, what you don't know, and the constraints
- Read the related work first, so it has good material to recombine
- Then leave. Walk, sleep, shower, stare out the window. No input.
- Come back with the [[Waking mind]] and critique whatever showed up
The catch in 2026: [[AI makes it harder to remain idle]]. Every gap that used to feed the background mind now gets filled by checking on an agent. Protect the gaps.
