# Reaper
REAPER (Rapid Environment for Audio Production, Engineering, and Recording) is a digital audio workstation (DAW) by Cockos for recording, editing, mixing and mastering multitrack audio and MIDI.
Why it stands out? It's a full professional DAW that is tiny, fast, stable and cheap. One edition. No artificial limits (unlimited tracks, sends and FX).
## Key traits
- **Cross-platform**: Windows, macOS and Linux. It can even run portable from a USB or network drive
- **Licensing**: 60-day full evaluation, then an affordable DRM-free license. A REAPER 7 license covers free updates through 8.99, and new releases land every few weeks
- **Plugin support**: VST, VST3, LV2, AU, CLAP, DX and JSFX (Reaper's own scriptable effects format)
- **Routing**: flexible multichannel audio/MIDI routing, 64-bit internal processing, FX containers, parallel routing
- **Editing**: track lanes and swipe comping for takes, razor edits, automation, grouping
- **Built-in effects**: the ReaPlugs suite (ReaEQ, ReaComp, ReaLimit, ReaSurroundPan, etc.)
- **Customization**: scripting (Lua, EEL2, Python), OSC and control surfaces, themes and layouts
## For guitar
Load an amp sim or capture tool like [[Tonocracy]] as a plugin. Record a DI track once and reamp it with any tone you want afterwards, so you never have to commit to a tone while recording.
